(tirzepatide) injection
Weekly injection
Helps you feel full faster, longer
Improves the way your body responds to sugars
Mounjaro is not Health Canada approved for weight loss, but may be prescribed off-label if a provider deems it appropriate
Mounjaro is currently only approved for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes in adults. The active ingredient in Mounjaro is tirzepatide. Tirzepatide is known as a GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist. Mounjaro works best when combined with a diabetes-friendly diet and regular exercise.
Mounjaro works by mimicking two hormones in the body (GLP-1 and GIP) that interact with the brain's appetite control centre, the hypothalamus, to lower food-seeking behaviours and hunger.
By lowering hunger, we're able to eat less and lose weight.
Mounjaro has additional mechanisms which support the management of blood sugar and fat storage, improving overall health.
We will work with you to determine if your insurance provider provides coverage for your GLP-1 medication, which is paid for separately from our weight loss program. If your insurance provider provides coverage, our Insurance Concierge Team will work with you and your insurance provider to provide the necessary documentation. If coverage is denied, we'll help you understand your options, including paying cash.
Selecting a GLP-1 that’s right for you depends on a few factors, including your health history and insurance coverage (if you’re using insurance).
If you qualify for our weight loss program, our team will help determine which GLP-1 is the best fit for you.
You'll inject the medication underneath the skin using an injection pen (a tiny needle - like a pinprick). You should inject into abdominal fat, thigh, or upper arm - ideally, you should rotate between these locations.
This is a painless and quick process, and we'll guide you through how to do this! Regardless of the dose, you'll only inject Mounjaro once per week.
Injections should be administered on the same day each week. These can be done at any time of day, with or without food.
Your Medical Weight Loss team will walk you through the side effects patients report most often:
Nausea
Vomiting
Upset stomach
Stomach pains
Constipation
Diarrhea

Important Safety Information
Everyone can have a different experience, but here are the most common side effects experienced by patients taking Mounjaro: Nausea, Diarrhea, Decreased appetite, Vomiting, Constipation, Indigestion and Stomach Pain.
What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a prescription medication specifically designed to address moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults. This condition is characterized by the rapid growth of skin cells, leading to inflamed, red, and scaly patches on the skin.
How Does Mounjaro Work?
Mounjaro works by targeting the underlying cause of plaque psoriasis, which is inflammation and abnormal skin cell growth. It contains active ingredients that help reduce inflammation and slow down the excessive production of skin cells, ultimately improving the appearance and condition of affected skin areas.
What to Expect with Mounjaro Treatment?
Patients undergoing Mounjaro treatment typically experience a reduction in the severity of their psoriasis symptoms, including decreased redness, scaling, and itching. With consistent use as directed by a healthcare provider, Mounjaro can lead to clearer and healthier-looking skin, providing relief and improved quality of life for individuals living with plaque psoriasis.
Who Is Eligible?
Mounjaro is typically prescribed for adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who have not responded well to other treatments or who cannot tolerate other medications. Your healthcare provider will assess your medical history and severity of psoriasis to determine if Mounjaro is the appropriate treatment option for you.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Mounjaro may include mild skin irritation, itching, and redness at the application site. These reactions usually resolve on their own and do not require discontinuation of the medication. However, rare but severe side effects such as allergic reactions or skin infections may occur. Patients should promptly report any unusual symptoms to their healthcare provider.
The cost of Mounjaro is typically around $385 CAD + HST per month. However, please note that prices may vary based on factors such as the pharmacy, dosage, and other factors.
While no foods are strictly off-limits when taking Mounjaro, certain foods can cause gastrointestinal symptoms similar to the medication's side effects or make glycemic control and weight loss more difficult. Limiting or avoiding these foods can help reduce the side effects you experience with Mounjaro. Your healthcare provider can recommend the best meal plan for you, considering your current medical conditions and history.
Mounjaro is generally considered safe for people with type 2 diabetes and obesity. However, it has a safety profile that includes common and rare side effects, contraindications (specific reasons not to take the medication), and precautions for use. While Mounjaro is safe for most people, it comes with certain risks. Our clinicians evaluate these risks before prescribing Mounjaro to ensure it is suitable for you.
Mounjaro’s manufacturer provides the following instructions for what to do if you miss an injection. If 4 or fewer days have passed since your missed dose: Take the missed dose right away. Continue with your usual weekly dosing schedule. If more than 4 days have passed since your missed dose: Skip your missed dose, then take your next weekly dose at the scheduled time. In any case, wait at least 3 days (72 hours) between Mounjaro injections.
